If Side A of Hemanth M. Rao’s Sapta Sagaradaache Ello was about a girl losing her singing voice and falling in love, Side B is about the reason she is attempting to reintroduce music and light into her life.
Nostalgia hasn’t had time or opportunity to coat the concept of this movie in a rich layer of gold and elevate it above what transpires on screen because both portions were released so soon after one another. Thus, the minor flaws are visible. This two hours and twenty-seven minute film has a few questionable takes.
Sapta Sagaradaache Ello – Side B Movie Review
In 2021, COVID-19 has taken over every person’s life. When a plump Manu, his face scarred and his mischievous youthfulness long gone, emerges from prison, we are all living in our own prisons. Priya (played by Rukmini Vasanth in her charming roles in Side A) leads a life that has shrunk with the passage of time. Her aspirations of a tidy, bright home with Manu, for example, have all fallen through, but she keeps going because she is a persistent person. Her demeanor has changed from energetic to accepting; she still walks with a rigid gait, her plait has become thinner, her smile has nearly vanished, and her salwar kameez has been replaced by a simple polyester sari that is pinned to her blouse.
As Manu steps into this new world, Prakasha sets him up with a prostitute named Surabhi—a radiant Chaithra J. Achar who dazzled in Toby and now mesmerizes with her easygoing demeanor and half grins. You feel choked after their first meeting because she’s shocked that someone is raising her up. All he is doing with Priya is what he has always wanted to do. During the act, he closes his eyes, which Surabhi rightly associates with a different girl. He makes a great effort to discover Priya in her, asking whether she like the water and if she sings. Surabhi and Priya are so dissimilar from one another that Surabhi can’t stand the heat, humidity, or the smell of fish, whereas Priya liked the ocean. However, their love for Manu and his love for them is the one thing that unites them.
Sapta Sagaradaache Ello – Side B Performances
This is when my troubles started. Manu’s bond with Priya is so deep that he defies logic in an attempt to obtain some access into her life, despite Prakasha’s persistent pleas for him to cease. He often visits her husband’s struggling restaurant. Drinks with him, too. Using a misplaced set of keys, he gains entry into her home and meets her brother Vinodh, who is now an auto driver and is a Bharath GB (effective, as seen in Sakutumba Sametha and Toby). He is keeping a close eye on her and making every effort to improve her life.
If affection is care, then Manu’s actions are retribution for what he has done to the once-vibrant Priya. Is that penance, though, done correctly? Given that Manu was in the care of the reforming/striving to reform Patil on Side A, I’m still not sure if the techniques used are appropriate (certain things clearly fall under the stalking category, and I’m afraid of people who might not see the bigger picture and just this).
Sapta Sagaradaache Ello – Side B Audience POV
Maintaining the massive, gut-wrenching feelings that Side A left you with is not an easy task. In a way, Side B struggles with the question of whether the story will be about people who lost love, people who found new lives, or individuals seeking retribution. After the last encounter with Manu, Soma (a scary Ramesh Indira) returns, hard of hearing this time, and what started in the prison continues in the larger jail outside. Here, in the uncut fights choreographed by Vikram Mor, Manu makes excellent use of his muscular build.
Even a sensitive audience would not want Manu to give up on Prabhu anna (Achyuth Kumar) or exact his literal “pound of flesh” from Shankre Gowda’s wife and son. Thus, he acts. In a fitting epilogue, the money that initially led Manu to believe he could start again also contributes to the establishment of two other people’s lives. Hemanth undoubtedly receives committed performances from his cast, if there is one thing. Rakshit gives a fantastic performance, seeming to be half-dead on the inside and half-alive on the exterior. Chaithra does a fantastic job portraying someone who swears she will never again give someone a piece of her heart big enough to damage her and then goes on to do just that. Rukmini is everyone’s moral compass. In their assigned duties, composer Charan Raj, cinematographer Advaitha Gurumurthy, and co-editor (with Hemanth) Sunil S. Bharadwaj are flawless. This is the kind of IT staff that one can only dream about.
Sapta Sagaradaache Ello – Side B Final Thoughts
Love is an intricate, multifaceted, and nuanced emotion. Furthermore, it is not done justice to reduce it to only romance and sex. The older, wiser Manu makes up for what the younger Manu did wrong. In this manner, Manu ultimately experiences love and gets to dip his feet into the sea.
