On February 22, 2024, Avatar: The Last Airbender, a live-action series, will make its official Netflix debut. During its Geeked Week event on Thursday, the streaming service unveiled the first teaser trailer and the premiere date for the show.
In 2018, Netflix made the initial announcement about the live-action version of the popular animation series. Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series’ original creators, were on board to give a better adaptation of the series than the M. Night Shyamalan movie. But after two years, the two departed from the project, citing a difference in vision between the Netflix series and the “spirit and integrity of Avatar.” Since then, they have announced further Avatar-related cartoon projects.

In the meantime, Albert Kim from Sleepy Hollow led a new creative team that took over the Netflix series. As directors, Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the Cloud), Jabbar Raisani (Lost in Space), and Michael Goi (Riverdale) also joined. Gordon Cormier (The Stand), Kiawentiio (Anne with an E), Ian Ousley (Sokka), and Dallas Liu (Pen15) (Zuko) make up the primary cast. Prominent figures such as Daniel Dae Kim, Amber Midthunder, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Danny Pudi, and George Takei are accompanied by the four relative novices.
Early teases of the show have already been released, featuring costumed versions of both the Fire Nation characters and the main actors. There is yet more to come for the live-action Avatar, as an official release date approaches.
